BISMARCK PALM
BISMARCK PALM

Product Details

The Bismarck Palm (Bismarckia nobilis) is a striking, evergreen palm known for its intensely steel-blue, fan-shaped fronds and thick trunk. It's relatively easy to grow, adaptable to hot, dry climates, and can be a dramatic addition to landscapes as a specimen or in rows.
Key Characteristics:
  • Foliage: Features broad, rounded, fan-shaped fronds that are a striking steel-blue color, 4 feet long and wide, according to Gardenia.net.
  • Trunk: A thick trunk topped by the fronds, with persistent leaf bases that are split, creating an attractive pattern.
  • Growth: Grows slowly when young, then moderately once a trunk develops.
  • Mature Size: Can reach 40-70 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide.
  • Hardiness: Tolerant of high, dry heat and low desert conditions; can regrow from rare freezes to 25°F (-4°C).
  • Water Needs: Highly drought tolerant and moderately tolerant of salt spray.
  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to part shade.
  • Wind Sensitivity: Not as resistant to wind damage as some other palms.
Care and Maintenance:
  • Planting:
    Best grown in well-drained soils.
  • Pruning:
Only completely dead leaves should be removed; avoid trimming partially dead leaves.
  • Pests and Diseases:
While generally pest and disease-free, keep an eye out for palmetto weevils and ganoderma butt rot.
  • Propagation:
Propagated by seeds, which can take 6-12 months to germinate at high temperatures (90-100°F or 32-37°C).
Landscape Use:
  • Specimen Plant:
Its dramatic size and appearance make it ideal as a focal point in a lawn or garden.
